ASTRO PANDA: A Bold Display Font for Out-of-This-World Branding

It was a rainy Tuesday morning when I opened up Photoshop to start a new branding project for a local handmade candle shop. The brief was clear: modern, playful, and just a little quirky. I had a rough mood board and a few color swatches, but the one thing missing was the right typeface to bring the whole identity to life. That’s when I remembered ASTRO PANDA, a space-themed display font I’d downloaded a few weeks prior. I wasn’t sure how it would fit a candle brand, but curiosity got the better of me.

The first thing I noticed when I typed out the shop’s name in ASTRO PANDA was its bold presence. This is a high-weight font with a futuristic edge, and it immediately brought a sense of fun and energy to the design. The letters have a firm, almost mechanical structure, which gives it a robotic feel—perfect for a character like the Robot Panda it was designed to support. But surprisingly, it also felt versatile enough to work in a more organic brand setting, especially when paired with the right supporting fonts.

Logo Design That Stands Out

I dropped ASTRO PANDA into the logo mockup and was stunned. The sharp corners and wide letterforms made the brand name feel confident and modern. It wasn’t too sci-fi, either. With a warm color palette of earthy tones and some subtle texture overlays, the font grounded the logo in a way that felt both contemporary and approachable.

Because it’s a display font, I knew ASTRO PANDA wouldn’t work well in long-form text. But as a logo typeface, it shined. It’s the kind of font that makes people stop and notice—perfect for a small business trying to stand out in a crowded market. I made sure to test it at different sizes: on a tiny business card mockup, on a large storefront sign, and even as a favicon on a website wireframe. In every case, the boldness held up, and the character details (like the subtle nods to the Robot Panda design) added a layer of personality that’s hard to achieve with more generic fonts.

Packaging and Print Materials That Pop

Once the logo was approved, I moved on to packaging design. The client wanted custom labels for their soy candles, and I knew ASTRO PANDA would be perfect for the product name and key taglines. I used it sparingly—just a few words per label—to keep the design from feeling too heavy. The font’s high contrast and structured forms made the text feel premium, especially when printed on matte kraft paper with a spot UV finish.

I also tested it on thank-you cards, gift tags, and hang tags for retail display. In each case, ASTRO PANDA brought a sense of boldness and playfulness that matched the brand’s handmade, small-batch vibe. It helped that the font includes a range of alternates and ligatures, which allowed me to customize the look for different product lines without losing consistency.

Pairing ASTRO PANDA with Supporting Typefaces

Of course, no display font works in isolation. To keep the brand identity balanced, I paired ASTRO PANDA with a clean sans serif for body copy and a soft script font for taglines and special notes. The contrast between the futuristic boldness of ASTRO PANDA and the simplicity of the sans serif created a nice visual rhythm that worked across both digital and print materials.

On the website mockups, I used ASTRO PANDA only in the hero section—mainly for the brand name and a short headline. Below that, I switched to a more readable web-safe font for the rest of the content. This kept the design from becoming overwhelming and ensured the brand still felt professional and trustworthy.

Testing Before Finalizing

Before sending the final brand guidelines to the client, I did a few rounds of testing. I exported PDF proofs, printed samples in different sizes, and even created a few social media templates to see how the font would hold up on Instagram and Pinterest. Each time, ASTRO PANDA performed well—especially in digital thumbnails where bold, clear type is essential.

I also made sure to check the font’s licensing terms. Since the client planned to use the branding across multiple platforms—including product packaging, digital ads, and merchandise—it was important that ASTRO PANDA was cleared for commercial use. Luckily, the font included a standard commercial license, so there were no issues there.

When and Where to Use ASTRO PANDA

ASTRO PANDA is definitely best suited as a headline font or logo typeface. It shines brightest in short bursts—like on product packaging, social media headers, posters, and flyers. It’s not ideal for body copy or long paragraphs, but that’s true of most display fonts. What makes ASTRO PANDA stand out is its unique personality and strong visual presence.

If you’re working on a branding project that needs a bit of character—whether it’s for a creative studio, a boutique shop, or a fun food concept—ASTRO PANDA could be the perfect fit. Just remember to use it strategically and pair it with more neutral fonts to create balance.

Final Thoughts (Without Saying It)

By the time the candle shop launched, I was confident in the design system we’d built. ASTRO PANDA had played a big role in shaping the brand’s visual identity, and it reminded me how much a single font can influence the overall feel of a project. Whether it’s for a logo, packaging, or digital graphics, this font has earned a spot in my toolkit for future client work.
